Here’s my short personal journey of someone who’s been given a second chance at life — a chance I never take for granted.

I spent nine years on dialysis, and during that time, I developed a rare and devastating condition called Calciphylaxis. It caused painful skin lesions and ulcers, and there were moments I truly didn’t know if I’d make it through. The pain was intense, and the emotional toll was even heavier. But through it all, I held onto hope, gratitude and positive thoughts knowing that one day, things might change.

I had the best support system anyone could ask for, my partner Pua Faletolu, my family, my friends, and a workplace that stood by me through it all. I felt their prayers, their love, and their unwavering belief in me. That support carried me through some of the hardest days, including my time at Mary Potter Hospice, in 2022. Even after that, the challenges continued. I was still on dialysis three times a week, still fighting, still hoping. And then, everything changed — thanks to the incredible gift of organ donation.

This year, we got the call, “Faá we have a kidney for you.” A donor and their whānau gave me life. Their selfless act gave me the chance to heal, to dream again, and to be present with those I love. I carry their legacy with deep gratitude and a sense of purpose. Being part of Thank You Day is more than just sharing my story, it’s about honouring those who gave, celebrating those who received, and inspiring others to consider the life-changing power of organ donation. It’s a chance to celebrate life, to acknowledge the courage of donor families, and to remind everyone that one act of kindness can change everything.
